I thought it might be interesting to compare the Fool card in the Rider Waite with the Fool card in the Mythic deck. This is my favourite deck and one I have been using for around 40 years so we are good friends!
This deck is based on Greek mythology and the character who is the star of this story is Dionysos. A Greek God who was the child of Zeus..
Here we don’t have the bright optimistic colours contained in the Rider Waite version , but the actions are still the same. Our adventurer is clearly beginning a new journey and the cave that is behind him represents not only his previous security but his past which he needs to walk away from.
The eagle – who is Zeus in disguise – is keeping his beady eyes not only on the person, but looking at the journey that is ahead of them. This bird will be the guiding spirit.
The Fool’s dress seems rather drab as he’s wearing an animal skin and has goats horns and a wreath of green vine leaves on his head. He is just like a young animal about to take off on new adventures and jump into the unknown.
He is keen to do this without being able to see where he will land or his journey will take him . He feels the need for change and very little will stop him from making that jump.
