Here he sits then on his golden throne, seemingly on high and surveying the world. He has a glorious purple robe with a gold trim and a gold crown upon his head. In his left hand he holds the globe of the world and in his right, there are three lightning bolts. An eagle sits on his shoulder and in the background there are mountains with snow capped peaks.

A Brief History

Say hello to the great god Zeus. He was the creator of the world and sovereign of gods and men so a god with the greatest power. Zeus was the youngest son of the Titans Cronos and Rhea. There was a prophecy told to Chonos that one day one of his sons would overthrow him and take his place. So naturally to make sure this didn’t happen every time his wife had a child he snatched them away and destroyed them by swallowing them! . His wife was none too happy about this of course so when her sixth child was born, Zeus, she disappeared off to Arcadia to have him in a cave in secret. She the wrapped up a big stone and presented it to Cronos who immediately swallowed it.

When Zeus grew up he returned to Cronos and gave him a potion which made him sick, and out of his mouth came all the five children he had swallowed – as well as the stone. Naturally Zeus overthrew his father and set up a new rule. Zeus lived in Olympus and put together a new team of Gods who would obey him, his wife was Hera, goddess of marriage and childbirth.  He was a volatile chap and had many lovers and many children.

Tarot Thoughts

The Emperor

This man is strong and decisive but you would not like to get on the wrong side of him because he can also be vengeful. He likes things his way, but on the flip side of this person he is also caring and likes to watch over people to make sure that they are on the right path and that they will survive and thrive. He is a protector, tarot cards are full of symbols and on this one the eagle is known as a bird who sees all and will be keeping a close eye of any happenings, he/she will issue a warning if there is anything untoward.  The globe in Zeus’s hand indicates that his power over the world is all encompassing. The lightening bolts in his other hand show us that he can be bad tempered and flare up in an instant if he is displeased. Someone then to be wary of and perhaps someone who we can learn from. Both Zeus as us mortals need to use our power wisely.
